Web Access 8

In Laserfiche 8, we’re making a number of enhancements to Web Access to take advantage of the latest developments in Web technology and to help you work with documents more easily:

  • A Quick Search Bar will appear on every page, so you’ll no longer have to access a separate page to enter your search criteria. Simply type your search terms into the new bar, and documents that contain those terms—whether in their names, text, template fields or annotations—will appear in the search results.
  • Browsing through documents returned by a search will be easier than ever, because thumbnails of the document’s pages will appear as soon as you select the document. This enhancement will help you quickly determine whether the document is the one you’re looking for, without having to open it. You can also expand the thumbnails to view 30 or 40 pages at once, and then double-click a particular thumbnail to open the document right to the page you need.
  • Once you open a document, you’ll find a number of new tools to make reading it easier. Zooming will be faster than in the past, because the system will only load the part of the image you zoom to. Also, a new panning tool will enable you to “grab” the page and easily slide different areas into view.
  • Having trouble finding a word or phrase in the document you’ve opened? The Quick Search Bar will help you with this as well. Simply type in the word or phrase, and all the “hits” within the document will appear. Lines of context will appear as well, just as they do in repository-wide searches.
  • An expanded set of annotation tools will enable you to add even more information to a document, without altering the original image. Callouts and text boxes will enable you to add text annotations, without requiring others to open a sticky note to read what you’ve written. Enhanced drawing tools will allow you to add lines and boxes, as well as to underline text or strike it through. You’ll even be able to add a file as an annotation by “paper clipping” it right to the image.
  • Expanded PDF support will prove particularly useful when you need to send a document to another user. The annotations you add in Web Access will no longer be embedded into the image; instead, they’ll be included as built-in annotation types for the PDF format, meaning that annotation text can either be displayed or hidden during viewing. You’ll also be able to apply a password to the PDF file to present an unauthorized person from accessing it.
  • Finally, Web Access 8 will support the Mozilla® Firefox® 2.0 Web browser. If you’re a fan of Firefox, you’ll no longer have to switch to Internet Explorer to use Web Access. This enhancement also means that Apple® Macintosh® users will be able to find, import and annotate Laserfiche documents from within their Mac environment.
