Tech Tip: Customizing the Laserfiche 8 Client Shortcut
Save time and effort by modifying the shortcut to the Laserfiche 8 client
August 30th, 2010 by UserEducationIn recent Tech Tips, we have discussed how to create desktop shortcuts that link to a specific document or folder in your repository or to a specific page in a document. This week, we will show you how to customize the shortcut to the Laserfiche 8 Client application itself.
Modifying this shortcut enables you to specify a particular repository (from the list of available repositories) to open when the Client is launched, or even automatically log in to that repository using Windows Authentication. Together these modifications can save you (or your users) time because you won’t have to find a repository on the list or provide login credentials every time you open the Client.
This is especially useful if there is a particular repository that you access more frequently than others. For example, Kate is a salesperson for B&G Paper Company and she only needs to access the repository called BGSales for her work. She can create a shortcut that is customized to select and automatically log in to BGSales when launched, and store this shortcut on her Windows desktop for quick and easy access.
Note: To successfully customize a shortcut to automatically log in to a repository when launched, you must have a Windows account, or one associated with a Laserfiche user, configured for that repository.
To customize the Laserfiche Client shortcut to automatically log in to a particular repository using Windows Authentication (Windows accounts or Laserfiche users associated with a Windows account)
- Make sure you have a Windows account, or one associated with a Laserfiche user, configured for your repository.
- Right-click on the Laserfiche Client shortcut and select Properties.
- Select the Shortcut tab.
- Next to Target, you should see the following string: “C:\Program Files\Laserfiche\Client 8\LF.exe”

- Modify the string to match the following syntax: “C:\Program Files\Laserfiche\Client 8\LF.exe” -L“RepositoryName” -U, where RepositoryName is the name of the repository you want to log in to.
To customize the Laserfiche Client shortcut to open a login dialog for a particular repository (Laserfiche users)
- Right-click on the Laserfiche Client shortcut and select Properties.
- Select the Shortcut tab.
- Next to Target, you should see the following string: “C:\Program Files\Laserfiche\Client 8\LF.exe”
- Modify the string to match the following syntax: “C:\Program Files\Laserfiche\Client 8\LF.exe” -L“RepositoryName”, where RepositoryName is the name of the repository you want to log in to.
Note: If you have previously used the Use Windows Authentication checkbox to log in to the specified repository, you will need to clear it, log into the repository as a Laserfiche user, and log back out before using your modified shortcut as intended. By default, Laserfiche will remember your previous login selection and if the Use Windows Authentication checkbox was last selected, users will not have the opportunity to provide their Laserfiche login credentials when they click the shortcut.
