The
American Ecology Corporation is the oldest continuously operating company
in the US that handles, stores, treats and disposes of radioactive and
hazardous waste. Its subsidiary, US Ecology, has been providing nuclear
management services since 1952 and hazardous waste management services
since 1968. During that time, the company has safely managed more than
100 million cubic feet of radioactive, hazardous and toxic wastes.
Along
with all these accomplishments, American Ecology has also accumulated
millions of pages of files, including thousands of boxes of records of
its work at nuclear sites which are kept for a minimum of 40 years.
At
the direction of Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jack Lemley, the
company has embarked on an effort to digitize its files and create a searchable
archive of its extensive records. After an intensive review, the company
chose Laserfiche and the Boise office of Idaho Falls-based United Micro
Data, Inc., to help them with this massive project, which started in early
July.
"The
goal is to scan every relevant document in our possession by the end of
next year," says Seth Wallace, American Ecology's Corporate Quality
Assurance Officer who is also serving as the document imaging project
leader. "It's a huge undertaking but, in the end, we will be a better,
more efficient company with instantaneous access to a unique store of
information on our capabilities and experience."
To
date, American Ecology has scanned all of its quality assurance reports
going back to 1989 into a centralize Laserfiche database at corporate
headquarters. These reports form the backbone of the entire archive and
are already being used by the company.
As
these and other projects proceed at corporate headquarters, Wallace is
also deploying five additional Laserfiche systems at key operating locations
in Washington , Nevada , Texas and Tennessee . The scanning results from
each site will be added to the central database using Laserfiche's
CD publishing and briefcasing capabilities. Eventually, most of the
archives will be available on a password-protected intranet website.
"We're
delighted with how things are progressing," Wallace says. "Laserfiche
is easy to use, which is very important when trying to manage a project
of this magnitude. Laserfiche offers a wide range of features and provides
excellent security options.
And we are getting excellent support from United Micro Data. It all makes
us feel very confident that we will reach our aggressive goals for timely
project completion."
