The vast majority of medical practitioners are scrupulously honest in their dealings with Medicare and Medicaid, but there is a small percentage of bad apples who are trying to beat the system. In Iowa, the Medicaid Fraud Division of the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals is responsible for catching violators and deterring others who are tempted to cross the line. The Division's newest weapon in this quest is a laptop PC loaded with Laserfiche.

"The team now shows up at the suspect's offices with a subpoena, the laptop and a high speed portable scanner," says Dr. Sam Warren of Des Moines, IA-based Paper Free Technologies. "They seal the premises and stay there until they've scanned every record they need into the system. There's an indexing template that enables them to give each document a priority for further investigation. There's no boxing of files, no copying, no chance for something to get lost in the shuffle. It cuts a huge job down to something that's very manageable."

Back at Division headquarters in Des Moines, the information is archived in the group's network version of Laserfiche where as many as eight investigators and analysts may give it further reviews. The Division uses Laserfiche Plus to provide copies of the information to other investigative agencies, court officials and defense attorneys.
