Prior to committing Laporte County, IN. to an enterprise-wide implementation of Laserfiche, the Director of Data Processing, Ron Tulacz, visited other counties in the region that had converted to electronic document management.

"His objective was not so much to check out Laserfiche," reports Jeff Nelson of BOLT Document Management, a Laserfiche VAR based in Elkhart, IN. "Staff in the line departments had already settled on Laserfiche before he became deeply involved.

"Rather, he was looking at the other installations as a manager. He wanted to find out which implementation approaches were most effective and why.

"One of his primary recommendations was to establish a scanning center to take care of back file and day forward conversion needs for every department. He sees that approach as a way to ensure that the document management project will succeed now and as it grows.

"It's obviously not the only approach he could have taken but I like it a lot. It's based on the positive experiences of other counties and establishes the document conversion program as a high priority job that is going to be properly supported.

"We believe that this deliberate approach, which also includes extensive consultations with departments as to their specific goals for Laserfiche, ensures that the La Porte County solution will be successful."
