Iredell Memorial Hospital is a pioneer in cancer treatments such as cryosurgery and intensely modulated radiation therapy, with 135 physicians and 1,700 staff members providing outstanding patient care.

Situation

Iredell Memorial was losing $40,000 a month due to lost ER records. The staff log all emergency visits and reconcile them with patient charts at the end of their shift—generating nearly 300,000 pages per month. ER staff often found that they couldn’t reconcile the log with the patient records because the records were lost. Without documentation, the hospital had no way to collect for its services.

Solution

Iredell Memorial initially installed Laserfiche in the emergency room. Laserfiche so exceeded expectations, however, that the rehabilitation center, cancer center, radiation therapy center, medical records department, quality department, outpatient lab and hospital administration now use it, with plans to expand it to additional departments.

To further improve communications and workflow, the hospital integrated Laserfiche with its own physicians’ Web portal, so physicians can review ER records and other documents such as stop-med orders online. In the future, the hospital plans to link Laserfiche with SoftMed, their dictation transcription product, so staff will only need to scan in hand-written documents.
