ACE Bulletin: Improve Productivity, Gartner PCC-Style

How to Improve Productivity, Gartner PCC-Style

Earlier this month, Laserfiche had the pleasure of attending Gartner’s Portals, Content & Collaboration Summit in Orlando. One of the themes from the conference was how to empower employees to be more energized and productive by making work fun. To that end, Jane McGonigal, Director of Game Research & Development at the Institute for the Future, delivered a keynote about what the business world can learn from gamers: that positive emotion motivates people to perform.

Anticipating McGonigal’s message, a quartet of Gartner analysts spoke on Monday about how to create a positive work environment. Nick Jones pointed out that it’s hard to feel motivated and engaged when you’re forced to use outdated technology tools. He recommended embracing the BYOD trend, standardizing on data formats and APIs rather than specific tools and purchasing licenses for people instead of devices.

As Gartner’s Mark Gilbert stressed during his session on Monday, consumability, interoperability and usability are key when it comes to content management—both WCM and ECM as a whole. The right ECM system doesn’t ration access—it enables everyone to easily consume the information they need to make timely, intelligent business decisions. By serving as integrative middleware, it also enables them to do so in the manner (and through the primary application) with which they’re most comfortable.

Having an ECM system that empowers everyone within the organization with the flexibility to work the way that’s most productive for them without jeopardizing the company’s ability to keep its information secure goes a long way toward creating the positive feelings that motivate people to perform at their best.

Empowerment was also a theme during Margaret Anderson’s presentation about Collin County, TX. During her session, Anderson, Records Manager for Collin County, spoke about the importance of using a universally adopted ECM solution in making life easier for employees while helping the organization accommodate increased demand for services.

Anderson noted that Collin County’s ECM story was recently profiled in a Gartner report titled, “Document and Records Management Initiative Improves Customer Service and Efficiency.”
