Laserfiche was founded by Nien-Ling Wacker, a woman who began her career building custom solutions out of her home in the 1970s. She grew her business into the world’s leading ECM software company, which works to enable the digital workplace of the future. Today, she is recognized as a visionary leader and a pioneer in her field.

Wacker, along with countless other women, have made huge contributions to technology—yet women are still fighting for equality in the tech industry. As an ongoing initiative, we will highlight talented women who have excelled in the technology field.

How did you become interested in a career in technology? Have you always worked in tech, or did you transfer from another industry?

I started my career in tech after finishing my engineering degree and have stayed in the industry ever since. What interested me the most about technology is the diverse, challenging nature of the work, and the many different career paths one can take within the technology field.

At the beginning of my career, I worked on many different teams, including a support team, software development team, software design team, and a full systems development life cycle team. When I joined Laserfiche, I explored a completely new area of tech and I started as a presales engineer and eventually transitioned into my role as a technical manager.

To add to the fun, the tech industry has presented many opportunities around the world. I’ve worked in India, the United States and Hong Kong. Working in so many countries has enriched my technical experience as well as my personal experiences. I couldn’t have asked for more.

During your time at Laserfiche, what are some of your projects or achievements that you are most proud of?

There are probably too many to mention when I look back at my six years at Laserfiche. When I started, it was a two-person team. Today, we have more than 19 team members and we are still growing—which says a lot. Every project I have worked on is unique in its own right, but that is the nature of the industry. The clients are different, and so are their working styles. Adapting to each customer to ensure success requires a lot of hard work and personal touch. In fact, winning a project requires a lot of presales skills, and we have landed a few big customers that we are certainly proud of. In fact, I am proud of every single day that we are working as a team.

What advice would you give to other women who are interested in joining the tech industry? What about if they have no experience or formal education in technology?

Honestly, I don’t think it is as much about education as it is about aptitude and attitude. I never studied computer science myself, and I’ve learned everything I know through hands-on experience at my job.

As long as one has the motivation, they will enjoy the process of learning—and positive results that follow. I would tell other women to not be afraid; dive in and learn as you go.

What is the best career advice you have ever received?

If someone else can do it, you can do it too.

If you could spend a day with any woman in history, who would it be and why?

With no doubt it would be Marie Curie, a physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity. I first learned of her achievements as a kid and always wondered what made her so special. Her contributions have placed women at the highest position in the scientific community. Her legacy strongly inspires women to achieve “firsts,” and she would most distinctly be the one I would like to spend a day with if I could.
