Each year, the Center for Digital Government (CDG) partners with the National Association of Counties (NACo) to conduct the annual Digital Counties Survey. Since the program’s inception, counties from across the nation have sought the title of “Top Digital County” by explaining how they are currently using technology and improving public service in their respective communities. Upon review, the CDG ranks the top 10 survey respondents, among four population cohorts, and awards them with the honor of “Top Digital County” at NACo’s Annual Conference in Long Beach, CA.

The annual Digital Counties Survey gives counties the opportunity to showcase how they align technology with county goals and respond to key characteristics, including: Mobile Applications; Citizen Engagement; Shared Services and Collaboration Initiatives; Cybersecurity Measures; Hiring and Retaining Competent IT Personnel; Budget and Cost Control; and Disaster Recovery and Continuity of Operations.

We are excited to announce that 55 percent of the 2016 Top Digital Counties choose Laserfiche for ECM! Here is how three winning Laserfiche customers are at the forefront of technology trends.

Tompkins County, NY

Tompkins County, NY, has been named a Top Digital County for the past three years. Since implementing Laserfiche ECM, the County has converted more than 9,000 boxes worth of paper records to digital content and saved $5.5 million by eliminating the need to build a new records center.  After this success, Tompkins County invited neighboring municipalities to go digital as well by launching a shared service initiative known as Tompkins Shared Services Electronic Records Repository (TSSERR). The shared services program extends electronic records management capabilities to over 20 municipalities. This shared service reduces overall costs for TSSERR members and ensures that records across Tompkins County are consistent and easily accessible.

Brunswick County, NC

New to the list of Top Digital Counties is Brunswick County, NC. As one of the fastest growing counties in the nation, Brunswick County’s building department receives thousands of building inspections and hundreds of residential/commercial applications each month. Since population growth created more demand for county services, the county used Laserfiche ECM to automate the building permit and site inspection process. This allowed staff to “do more with less”— meet public demand without the additional cost of adding and training new employees. Contractors no longer have to drive hours in order to submit permit applications or other required documents to the building document.

Loudoun County, VA

For the 13^th year in a row, Loudoun County, VA, has been named a Top Digital County. Another rapidly growing government organization, Loudoun County has embraced technology by integrating its Laserfiche ECM software with 19 different systems—of all sizes—including an integration with its Oracle enterprise resource planning system. Loudoun County empowers its staff to develop creative solutions with Laserfiche and improve public service across 30 departments. By committing to process automation countywide, the organization has saved significant amounts of time and facilitates easier access to information.
