March 23, 2010 Laserfiche Issues “Challenge Grant” to Support Local Science and Technology Magnet School

LONG BEACH, CA (Laserfiche)—March 23, 2010—Laserfiche today announced that it has issued a “challenge grant” to the Long Beach community in order to support John C. Fremont Elementary School’s science and technology enrichment program. This program has helped Fremont students achieve impressive test scores that place the school in the top three percent in the nation.

Fremont’s science and technology enrichment program lost district funding in 2004, and has since been financially supported by the Fremont PTA. Due to the economic downturn and an increase in expenses, current PTA fundraising efforts are in danger of falling short of the $125,000 needed to finance the program during the 2010-2011 school year. Through its challenge grant to the Fremont PTA, Laserfiche will match every dollar that local businesses and families raise to keep the program alive.

“As a trained scientist and the founder of a successful software company, I shudder to think what will happen to this country’s competitive edge if science and technology enrichment programs like Fremont’s are allowed to die,” said Nien-Ling Wacker, Laserfiche president and CEO. “My colleagues and I urge the Long Beach community to step up and ensure that this new generation of scientists and technologists has a chance to thrive.”

Equipped with 35 computers, Fremont’s technology lab gives students a place to learn computer skills and create projects that are integrated with the classroom curriculum such as a PowerPoint presentation on California history. The science lab is a place for hands-on exploration of life, earth and physical sciences, all of which encourage children to think, question and observe. All content closely follows the California state content standards.

“Many of the greatest advancements of the past century have been due to scientific and technological breakthroughs, but without a strong foundation in critical educational disciplines such as math, science and computer science, our children will be unable to maintain this tradition of innovation,” said Susan Tanaka, president of the Fremont PTA. “We are grateful to Laserfiche for investing in the success of our students, our community and our future.”
