Brunswick County, NC, has been named one of America’s top digital counties by e.Republic’s Center for Digital Government and the National Association of Counties. The annual Digital Counties Survey aims to locate pioneering county governments and recognize them as adaptive IT leaders, collaborators and arbiters of the public trust.

Technology is key for Brunswick County to scale services for its rapidly growing population and recent influx of residential and commercial building projects. Part of the county’s digital strategy, the building department implemented a paperless building permit application process using Laserfiche enterprise content management to increase the department’s capacity for reviewing and approving permits, and performing building inspections, without needing to add staff.

“Brunswick County is the fastest growing county in North Carolina and among the fastest growing counties in the U.S.,” said Steve Randone, IT Director at Brunswick County. “Laserfiche and our core technologies enable our county government to manage this growth, promote transparency, increase access to government and services, better engage citizens and secure data—all while keeping costs under control.”

The county is three years into a five-year plan to update and improve technology infrastructure and processes, and, according to Randone, 98 percent of the goals outlined in the plan have been accomplished. Moving forward, the county plans to build more process solutions to improve efficiency across departments, and eventually share these solutions with other cities and counties in North Carolina.
