Tompkins County, NY, has been named one of America’s top digital counties by e.Republic’s Center for Digital Government and the National Association of Counties. The annual Digital Counties Survey aims to locate pioneering county governments and recognize them as adaptive IT leaders, collaborators and arbiters of the public trust.
Tompkins County’s innovative technology initiatives use Laserfiche enterprise content management to preserve 200 years of history in the form of millions of archived documents. Going digital enabled the county to modernize operations in all 29 of its departments and 18 of its municipalities, saving millions of taxpayer dollars and improving delivery of important services such fulfilment of public information requests.
“Laserfiche plays a significant role in Tompkins County’s ability to manage and protect information, mitigate the risks of disasters and provide transparency,” said Greg Potter, ITS Director at Tompkins County. “The ROI we’ve realized has been key in a time when government organizations are increasingly asked to ‘do more with less.’”
The county recently created a shared services electronic records repository, powered by Laserfiche, which serves 20 partnered government agencies including the City of Ithaca. Tompkins County continues to build on this shared services program by developing automated solutions to common business processes—such as public information requests—that can be shared with the group.
“Tompkins County’s forward-thinking technology program is a model for county governments and exemplifies outstanding stewardship of public funds,” said Katie Burke, Senior Government Program Strategist at Laserfiche. “By simplifying its records management and offering Laserfiche as a shared service, the county empowers its employees and its partner agencies to focus time and resources on serving citizens.”
